Nature Camp –fostering ecological awareness through education
Each year for almost twenty years the Nature Camp Foundation Board has met at our home, Rockland. It is about to be Board meeting time again.
Nature Camp is in Rockbridge County just over the Albemarle line near Vesuvius, VA in the George Washington National Park. For 5th graders (11 year olds) through high school years, this coed camp has been operating continuously each summer for sixty years.
An early camp brochure advertised the camp purpose as: to arouse the interest in our young people in plants, birds, wildlife soil, water and their interrelationships. The hoped for development of future conservation leaders certainly has come to pass. For many years Nature Camp was operated by the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. For the last several years it has been wholly by Alumni campers and supporters through the Nature Camp Foundation.
The Foundation Board meeting at our house each year is still those young at heart campers planning and discussing each new upcoming session.
Our home is centrally located for the many board attendees most come from Virginia and surrounding states.
The Lowry family has sent three generations of attendees to camp. We strongly believe that learning about the environment early in life teaches our young people how precious our world is.
